Recordemos siempre la visita de la lluvia. Cerrados los ojos, tratemos de evocar su vocerío y asistamos de nuevo a la victoria de sus huestes que, por un instante, derrotan la muerte.

Bolivia está modelada por un territorio montañoso que ocupa solamente el treinta por ciento de su territorio, una gran parte aún conserva arcanos de selva y chaco.  La Cordillera de los Andes extiende un brazo para erigir la Cordillera Real, en cuyas entrañas el mito fabuloso de las riquezas minerales se corporiza. Sus montañas irrumpen en la altiplanicie y desde sus profundidades se prodigan los metales que conformaron Potosí y su opulencia del siglo XVII.  En este imponente espacio nació Enrique Arnal, en Catavi, un centro minero, el mismo año de la ocupación de Laguna Chuquisaca (1932) que encendería el conflicto entre Paraguay y Bolivia.

Una densa historia cubre el caótico proyecto del estado republicano que debía acoger a todos sus habitantes con ethos contrastantes. Las montañas y las minas fueron el origen de estos espacios dónde el mito y las realidades construyeron la maqueta de un país asimétrico, de holguras y dispendio, de infortunios y penurias. Sucesivas guerras fueron amputando sus partes neurálgicas, como el acceso al Pacífico haciendo inevitable el pacto con el encierro entre la cordillera y el escudo amazónico. Entonces mirarnos dentro y desde adentro fue un destino.

Este escenario es, hasta ahora, la fuerza que modela a los habitantes de Bolivia, un territorio de desmesura, de inviernos de 20 grados bajo cero y cuarenta grados a la sombra, de ríos caudalosos y lagos que casi tocan el cielo, de pasiones políticas que recuerdan los primeros golpes de estado relatados en el Antiguo Testamento.  La conquista alteró aún más este epifánico territorio fracturado, pues ahora se sumaba el combate entre dos imaginarios y una lucha de siglos, yuxtaponiendo modos de vida y mezclándolos en cada desencuentro.

Cada ciclo histórico corresponde a una oscilación entre el autoritarismo y el populismo, entre la democracia pactada y las revoluciones sangrientas y los cambios en paz. Así, la conformación del imaginario boliviano es un constante relevo del itinerario entre el día luminoso y cálido y la noche oscura y fría.

Arnal, voraz lector, abriría el mundo desde las entrañas de sus montañas. Es sorprendente la cantidad de autores que eran de su preferencia, todos, casi sin excepción, tocaban temas que empujaban el puñal de la condición humana en condiciones extremas. Por eso Arnal, más que otros,  fue el pintor que construyó un reino-escenario que oscilaba entre el frío y el calor,  entre el avasallamiento de las corrientes externas y la vuelta a los orígenes,  en destronar la figura y volverla a construir, en eso fue proteico; generó una infinidad de posibilidades plásticas que marcaron su  recorrido artístico, crearon épocas e influyeron  en otras generaciones, pero sin estridencias, porque pronto abandonaba un estilo para sorprender con un informalismo telúrico o una búsqueda formal con el dibujo.

La revolución del 52 que cambiaría el rumbo de los bolivianos, develaría el rostro indígena de la sociedad boliviana y su impronta ocuparía la atmosfera del imaginario de la pintura boliviana. Para Arnal, cada visión acumulada durante su niñez en las minas, fueron acogidos en su memoria visual y la presencia indígena sería recurrente en su paleta de densos marrones, ocres, sienas y grises aplacados con el blanco cremoso. Esta etapa fue decisiva en su visión de cómo debería enprender su rol en la sociedad.

Esto puede explicarse solamente por la apertura inquisitorial al mundo, porque mientras los artistas sociales como Alandia Pantoja, Solón Romero, entre otros maestros importantes, asumían la tarea del compromiso ideológico frente a los artistas abstractos, Arnal transitaba sin ataduras y no tenía el afán de buscar solo su realización personal, más bien expandió su personalidad generando espacios para las nuevas generaciones.

El crítico Rafael Esquirru, recién en los años 70, se acercó a las obras de Arnal, entre éstas a la serie de cargadores o k’ipiris y proletarios, difuminadas sobre fondos negros y que luego de un viaje a Tiwanaku creyó ver esos mismos personajes en los caminos: “Me resulta imposible ver un cuadro de Arnal sin que se me superponga, por así decirlo, aquella imagen, lo interesante del arte de Arnal es que está muy lejos de ser ilustrativo. Se sostiene en términos estrictamente formales con un dibujo suelto y a la vez seguro, la paleta contenida en ocres, azules y grises, con algo más que blanco, blanquecino, que hace vibrar al todo. Se trata de una pintura esencialmente culta, que habla de refinamiento, no solo sensible sino intelectual”.

​El origen de toda esta corriente, enlazada históricamente con la revolución del 9 de abril del 52, fue incubada en los años treinta, cuando Keyserling, autor de Meditaciones Sudamericanas, (1939) había encalado en Bolivia y su primera expresión fue rotunda: “Bolivia es la América en trasunto. Y América es el continente que puede ufanarse de una fuerza más plasmadora que cualquier otra. Bolivia es probablemente la parte más antigüa de la humanidad y no hay mayor promesa de un futuro que un pasado remotísimo, porque no hay fin en el tiempo".

Esta visión desató un movimiento que el filósofo Guillermo Francovich la bautizó como Mística de la Tierra, y cuyos postulados fueron promovidos por Roberto Prudencio, Diez de Medina, Humberto Palza y Federico Avila, entre otros. Bolivia salía maltrecha, esta vez de la Guerra del Chaco (1932-35) y este movimiento exaltaba un nacionalismo inspirado en el nazifacismo, con la logia de excombatientes de la Guerra del Chaco (RADEPA, 1942). Varios militares alemanes (Kundt, Rhoem) fueron parte importante en el comando de la contienda bélica; sin embargo, había un abismo cultural entre las formas de vínculo con la naturaleza del hombre alemán y el boliviano. Elías Canetti apunta: “El símbolo de masa de los alemanes era el ejército; pero el ejército era más que un ejército: era el bosque desfilando. En ningún otro país moderno del mundo se ha mantenido, como en Alemania, tan vivo el sentimiento del bosque. Lo rígido y lo paralelo de los árboles en píe, su densidad y su número llena el corazón del alemán con una alegría profunda y misteriosa”.

Eran los uniformes de una sección del ejército, ordenados y de una misma especie, en cambio la Amazonía y las montañas andinas son un caos en forma, color y espacio, diferente a la ordenada foresta alemana. Estas oscilaciones de las miradas entre el orden y el caos creativo, sin duda fueron asumidas por Arnal, cuya capacidad para apoderarse de lenguajes plásticos y formales diferentes puede compararse con esa entropía que le permitía, en sus diferentes etapas, pasar sin procesos largos, a propuestas cerradas entre la nueva figuración y el informalismo o recrear la morfología indígena extendiendo su paleta con absoluta certeza de lo que quería. No habitaba la tierra de la uniformidad.

Martha Traba ya advirtió: “En este dilema, lo único claro fue siempre el mundo físico alrededor del artista latinoamericano, surtiéndole proposiciones étnicas, lingüísticas, geográficas, idiosincráticas de una riqueza muchas veces excesiva. Pero todo buen artista es consciente, por vía racional o instintiva de que la realidad no adquiere existencia sino a través de un proyecto y que la obra es tanto más valiosa cuanto más general es su proyecto” (1974).

El crítico Juan Acha define a las artes como conceptos: “Al fin y al cabo constituyen hechuras humanas, esto es, sistemas culturales. Como tales van de generación en generación y cada una varía los conceptos de acuerdo a sus necesidades históricas”.

Arnal pintó, en los años sesenta, una de las obras más felices de la pintura boliviana, El tambo, en cuya composición eligió como primer plano, los bolsones indígenas tejidos con listas marrones y grises, rotas por un resplandeciente zapallo naranja y amarillo cadmio, el carmín de la mujer que “está siendo” sentada, mirando hacia un horizonte abierto.

Fueron años de gran fecundidad y de acercamiento a las expresiones de Latinoamérica en busca de su independencia creativa, de las discusiones sobre Estado y sociedad, entre el problema de la dependencia, la autonomía y la urgencia de identidad cultural.

El siglo XXI encontró a Enrique Arnal con el discurso de la posmodernidad o la celebración del simple fluir, esfera de lo banal y del sin sentido, de difusas fronteras disciplinarias. En esta atmósfera, del supuesto fin del arte y su desmaterialización en puro concepto, preconizado por el filósofo Danto; Arnal reafirmó su entorno y no dejó de sorprendernos en cada hallazgo que celebraba en sus muestras, no se aferraba a una fórmula, más bien era audaz y se notaba el inmenso placer que le producía crear obras, fruto de una elucubración pictórica y plasmarlos con una exquisita técnica. Sin duda, Arnal fue un pilar en la generación de nuevas alternativas y abrió puertas a muchas posibilidades expresivas. El conjunto de su obra es un recorrido que fácilmente puede ser una manera de ver-leer la historia social y política de los bolivianos.

Desde su fecunda pasión, Enrique Arnal, nos transmite la polifonía de un país diverso al que amó sin condiciones.

Bolivia is shaped by a mountainous territory that occupies only thirty percent of its territory, a large part of which still preserves arcane forests and chaco. The Cordillera de los Andes extends an arm to erect the Cordillera Real, in whose bowels the fabulous myth of mineral wealth is embodied. Its mountains burst onto the plateau and from its depths the metals that made Potosí and its 17th century opulence are lavished. Enrique Arnal was born in this imposing space, in Catavi, a mining center, the same year of the occupation of Laguna Chuquisaca (1932) that would ignite the conflict between Paraguay and Bolivia.

A dense history covers the chaotic project of the republican state that had to welcome all its inhabitants with contrasting ethos. Mountains and mines were the origin of these spaces where myth and realities built the model of an asymmetric country, of gaps and waste, of misfortunes and hardships. Successive wars were amputating its neuralgic parts, such as access to the Pacific, making the pact with the confinement between the mountain range and the Amazon shield inevitable. So looking at ourselves inside and from within was a destination.

This scenario is, until now, the force that shapes the inhabitants of Bolivia, a territory of excess, of winters of 20 degrees below zero and forty degrees in the shade, of rushing rivers and lakes that almost touch the sky, of political passions reminiscent of the first coups d'etat reported in the Old Testament. The conquest further altered this epiphanic fractured territory, for now the combat between two imaginary and a centuries-old struggle was added, juxtaposing ways of life and mixing them in each disagreement.

Each historical cycle corresponds to an oscillation between authoritarianism and populism, between agreed democracy and bloody revolutions and changes in peace. Thus, the conformation of the Bolivian imaginary is a constant relay of the itinerary between the bright and warm day and the dark and cold night.

Arnal, voracious reader, would open the world from the bowels of its mountains. It is surprising the number of authors who were of their preference, all, almost without exception, touched on subjects that pushed the dagger of the human condition in extreme conditions. That is why Arnal, more than others, was the painter who built a kingdom-stage that oscillated between cold and heat, between the subjugation of external currents and the return to the origins, in dethroning the figure and rebuilding it, in that was protein; He generated an infinity of plastic possibilities that marked his artistic journey, created eras and influenced other generations, but without shrillness, because he soon abandoned a style to surprise with telluric informalism or a formal search with drawing.

The revolution of 1952 that would change the course of Bolivians, would reveal the indigenous face of Bolivian society and its imprint would occupy the atmosphere of the imagery of Bolivian painting. For Arnal, each vision accumulated during his childhood in the mines, were welcomed in his visual memory and the indigenous presence would be recurring in his palette of dense browns, ochres, sienna and grays appeased with creamy white. This stage was decisive in his vision of how he should learn his role in society.

This can only be explained by the inquisitorial openness to the world, because while social artists such as Alandia Pantoja, Solón Romero, among other important masters, assumed the task of ideological commitment vis-à-vis abstract artists, Arnal transited without strings and had no desire to seeking only his personal fulfillment, rather he expanded his personality generating spaces for the new generations.

The critic Rafael Esquirru, only in the 70s, approached the works of Arnal, among them the series of porters or k'ipiris and proletarians, blurred on black backgrounds and who after a trip to Tiwanaku thought he saw those same characters on the roads: “It is impossible for me to see a painting by Arnal without that image overlapping, so to speak, the interesting thing about Arnal's art is that it is far from being illustrative. It is supported in strictly formal terms with a loose and at the same time safe drawing, the palette contained in ocher, blue and gray, with something more than white, whitish, that makes the whole vibrate. It is an essentially cultured painting, which speaks of refinement, not only sensitive but intellectual.”

The origin of all this current, historically linked to the revolution of April 9, 52, was incubated in the 1930s, when Keyserling, author of South American Meditations, (1939) had whitewashed in Bolivia and his first expression was emphatic: "Bolivia it is America in transcript. And America is the continent that can boast of a more powerful force than any other. Bolivia is probably the oldest part of humanity and there is no greater promise of a future than a very remote past, because there is no end in time."

This vision unleashed a movement that the philosopher Guillermo Francovich baptized as Mystic of the Earth, and whose postulates were promoted by Roberto Prudencio, Diez de Medina, Humberto Palza and Federico Avila, among others. Bolivia was battered, this time from the Chaco War (1932-35) and this movement exalted a nationalism inspired by Nazifacism, with the lodge of ex-combatants from the Chaco War (RADEPA, 1942). Several German soldiers (Kundt, Rhoem) were an important part in the command of the warfare; However, there was a cultural gulf between the forms of connection with nature of the German and Bolivian man. Elías Canetti points out: “The mass symbol of the Germans was the army; but the army was more than an army: it was the forest parading. In no other modern country in the world has the feeling of the forest been kept as alive as in Germany. The stiffness and parallelness of the standing trees, their density and their number fill the heart of the German with a deep and mysterious joy.”

They were the uniforms of a section of the army, ordered and of the same species, while the Amazon and the Andean mountains are a chaos in shape, color and space, different from the orderly German forest. These oscillations of the glances between order and creative chaos were undoubtedly assumed by Arnal, whose ability to seize different plastic and formal languages ​​can be compared with that entropy that allowed him, in its different stages, to pass without long processes, to Proposals closed between the new figuration and informalism or recreating indigenous morphology by extending its palette with absolute certainty of what it wanted. The land of uniformity did not inhabit.

Martha Traba has already warned: “In this dilemma, the only thing that was always clear was the physical world around the Latin American artist, supplying him with ethnic, linguistic, geographic, idiosyncratic propositions of a wealth that is often excessive. But every good artist is aware, rationally or instinctively, that reality does not come into existence except through a project and that the work is all the more valuable the more general its project is (1974)."

The critic Juan Acha defines the arts as concepts: “After all, they constitute human works, that is, cultural systems. As such they go from generation to generation and each one varies the concepts according to their historical needs."

Arnal painted, in the sixties, one of the happiest works of Bolivian painting, El tambo, in whose composition he chose as the foreground, the indigenous pockets woven with brown and gray stripes, broken by a glowing orange and cadmium yellow squash, the lipstick of the woman who is "being" seated, looking towards an open horizon.

They were years of great fruitfulness and of approach to the expressions of Latin America in search of their creative independence, of the discussions on the State and society, between the problem of dependency, autonomy and the urgency of cultural identity.

The 21st century found Enrique Arnal with the discourse of postmodernism or the celebration of simple flow, a sphere of the banal and the meaningless, of diffuse disciplinary borders. In this atmosphere, the supposed end of art and its dematerialization in pure concept, advocated by the philosopher Danto; Arnal reaffirmed his environment and did not cease to amaze us with each discovery he celebrated in his exhibitions, he did not cling to a formula, rather he was bold and the immense pleasure that creating works, the result of a pictorial lucubration and reflected with a exquisite technique. Without a doubt, Arnal was a pillar in the generation of new alternatives and opened doors to many expressive possibilities. The whole of his work is a journey that can easily be a way to see-read the social and political history of Bolivians.

From his fruitful passion, Enrique Arnal, transmits to us the polyphony of a diverse country that he loved without conditions.
