En el Instituto Boliviano Alemán – que se ha convertido en uno de los centros culturales de más peso en el país – expone y habló Enrique Arnal.  Si la muestra pictórica ha sorprendido al público por su vigor expresivo y por la acertada audacia del color, su charla puede ser motivo de ocupación reflexiva para quienes se sienten solicitados y preocupados por el destino del arte y la cultura americana.
           
Hablar de su exposición, sería justificar su conferencia. El enjuiciamiento de ésta, en cambio, nos lleva a cuestionar el contenido problemático de su obra.  En el limitado espacio de esta nota no podemos intentar siquiera una esquematización de la concepción estética de Arnal denunciada en la muestra y desarrollada en la conferencia.  Nos limitaremos pues, a estas breves consideraciones marginales.
           
Las figuras monumentales que tipifican su producción evidencian el hallazgo de una búsqueda encaminada hacia el primitivismo americano. Esa ha sido la meta del peregrinaje inquisidor y, por el momento, el lugar de su afincamiento.  Resultado de tal buceo – inteligente y apasionado – en las raíces históricas de nuestro ser americano es una pintura que no dudamos en calificar como lo mejor logrado de la plástica actual boliviana y cuya originalidad indiscutible está connotada por una originalidad auténtica.
           
Juzgamos que Enrique Arnal y Marina Nuñez del Prado son artistas bolivianos que, sin caer en un realismo adocenado, anecdótico o “cosalista” expresan con más acierto y mayor profundidad la pasión del existir americano.
           
Y este juicio nos lleva de la mano al meollo fundamental de la exposición y de la conferencia de Arnal, que no es sino la formulación de su programa estético.  Creemos que acerca del arte y la cultura americanos, por el momento, es imposible una definición de sus elementos esenciales, así como la expresión de su íntimo contenido. Aún no puede precisarse la consistencia de lo americano. Ni Angel Guido, ni Vasconcelos, ni Exequiel Martínez Estrada, ni Leopoldo Zea, se lanzaron de lleno a la riesgosa aventura de atrapar entre las tenazas de la definición la substancia de nuestra turbulenta América. Porque América aún no es, está siendo. Su “factum ese” futuro es precedido por un actual “fieri”, dinámico, transitivo, mutable, de progresiva actualización potencial. Se pueden apuntar rasgos, señalar actitudes, pero no perfilar definitoriamente el alma americana.
           
Apuntada esta dificultad radical, señalamos un hecho incontrovertible. El rostro de América delata, inconfundiblemente, las huellas de un mestizaje cultural. No nos interesa dilucidar ahora si el proceso de transculturación padecido por el hombre de nuestro continente, en el encuentro de lo indígena y lo español, resultó perjudicial o saludable para nuestra constitución y nuestro destino. Pero importa, en grado sumo, señalar el hecho histórico de esta doble y conjugada entrega.
           
Enrique Arnal, en un inteligente intento por esbozar los fundamentos de una estética americana, se adhiere exclusivamente – y su obra documenta ésta preferencial adscripción – al arte americano pre-colombino. “En Tihuanaco podemos encontrar las raíces de un arte americano que escape a toda moda”, sostiene.
           
​Creemos acertado y necesario este reencuentro con nuestra perdida memoria, pero a condición de que este dialogar con lo primitivo americano no implique el olvido de otros elementos anímicos que configuran nuestro ser. Lo indígena nos puede dar la dimensión de profundidad, el enraizamiento en lo propio, pero otros valores hay que integran nuestra cultura y que por ende no pueden ser marginados en la programación o realización estéticas. Todos los acompañamos en esa “peregrinación a las fuentes”, más convencidos de que una expresión totalizadora de nuestra América trigueña debe, necesariamente, nutrirse y subsumir todos los elementos materiales e imponderables que dan a nuestro continente un contenido diverso del exclusivamente indio o español. Somos de ellos porque somos el resultado.

At the German Bolivian Institute - which has become one of the most important cultural centers in the country - Enrique Arnal exposes and speaks. If the pictorial exhibition has surprised the public with its expressive vigor and with the correct boldness of color, its talk may be a reason for reflective occupation for those who feel requested and concerned about the destiny of American art and culture.

To speak of his exposition would be to justify his lecture. The prosecution of this, on the other hand, leads us to question the problematic content of his work. In the limited space of this note we cannot even attempt a schematization of Arnal's aesthetic conception denounced in the exhibition and developed in the conference. We will limit ourselves, then, to these brief marginal considerations.

The monumental figures that typify his production show the discovery of a search directed towards American primitivism. That has been the goal of the inquisitor pilgrimage and, for the moment, the place of his settlement. The result of such diving - intelligent and passionate - in the historical roots of our American being is a painting that we do not hesitate to classify as the best achieved in contemporary Bolivian art and whose indisputable originality is connoted by authentic originality.

We judge that Enrique Arnal and Marina Nuñez del Prado are Bolivian artists who, without falling into stupid, anecdotal or "cosalista" realism, express with more success and depth the passion of American existence.

And this judgment takes us by the hand to the fundamental core of Arnal's exhibition and conference, which is nothing but the formulation of his aesthetic program. We believe that, for the time being, American art and culture cannot define its essential elements, as well as the expression of its intimate content. The consistency of the American cannot yet be specified. Neither Angel Guido, nor Vasconcelos, nor Exequiel Martínez Estrada, nor Leopoldo Zea, fully launched into the risky adventure of trapping the substance of our turbulent America among the pincers of definition. Because America is not yet, it is being. His future "factum ese" is preceded by a current "fieri", dynamic, transitive, mutable, with progressive potential updating. You can point out features, point out attitudes, but not define the American soul definitively.

With this radical difficulty pointed out, we point out an incontrovertible fact. The face of America unmistakably reveals the traces of a cultural miscegenation. We are not interested in elucidating now if the transculturation process suffered by the man of our continent, in the encounter of the indigenous and the Spanish, was harmful or healthy for our constitution and our destiny. But it is important, to the utmost degree, to point out the historical fact of this double and conjugated delivery.

Enrique Arnal, in a clever attempt to sketch the foundations of an American aesthetic, adheres exclusively - and his work documents this preferential attachment - to pre-Columbian American art. "In Tihuanaco we can find the roots of an American art that escapes in style," he says.

We believe that this reunion with our lost memory is correct and necessary, but on condition that this dialogue with the primitive American does not imply the forgetting of other emotional elements that shape our being. The indigenous thing can give us the dimension of depth, the rooting in the own thing, but other values ​​are there that integrate our culture and therefore cannot be marginalized in the aesthetic programming or realization. We all accompany them on this "pilgrimage to the sources", more convinced that a totalizing expression of our Latin America must, necessarily, be nurtured and subsume all the material and imponderable elements that give our continent a content different from that exclusively Indian or Spanish. We are theirs because we are the result.
